At the beginning of time, there was an Empire that stretched out a terrible hand across the stars. This Empire made the gates that allow for galactic travel, but at a great cost - every new gate required the death of a star. It took an Alliance of One Hundred Thousand to overthrow its iron rule, innumerable radical factions attacking in tandem from without and within. With their common enemy defeated, The Alliance split into one hundred thousand warring factions again, but the galaxy - some of it, at least - was free. In the present day, travelers earn their living wandering the star lanes, catching rides on research vessels and cargo freighters, working freelance, singing the dead star blues.
